The Bornies: 2009

Tomas Alfredson and his LET THE RIGHT ONE IN shared the spotlight with Christopher Nolan's THE DARK KNIGHT at this year's Bornie Awards. IN BRUGES, WALTZ WITH BASHIR, and HAPPY GO LUCKY were some of the many surprises. As always, the awards were handed out under a veil of secrecy at an undisclosed and badly lit location in Los Angeles, the "entertainment capital of the world." Winners were notified minutes before the ceremony and whisked away in blindfold to the affair by a former Blackwater Incursion Team now under exclusive contract to the Bornie Corporation.

The Bornie Awards have grown famous for pushing the envelope please (wink). And this year provided no shortage of controversy. A riot nearly broke out among those in attendance when Michael Chiklis and Shawn Ryan arrived to receive their award for The Shield: Family Meeting - the first time a television show has been honored at the ceremony. The break from tradition was met with equal parts giddy joy and furrowed-brow fury. More than one drink was reportedly thrown at Mr. Chiklis during the acceptance speech. Director Danny Boyle appeared particularly incensed that his critical darling Slumdog Millionaire was overlooked in favor of a "shitty Hill Street Blues knock-off," and was heard describing RB and KB as "knobs."

Among other surprises was Kathryn Hahn's Best Supporting Actress win for her brilliant comic turn in Step Brothers. The Curious Case of Benjamin Button didn't quite crack either top ten, but David Fincher did receive a special nod for the sleight of hand it took to make a $150 million dollar effects-driven movie about death. Revolutionary Road also pulled in a special nod for Sam Mendes' unflinching vision of a marriage gone sour. And while it may have ultimately been overshadowed by the two big winners of the evening, In Bruges easily took its place among the favorites of the year in a number of categories, with a special nod to Colin Farrel for his surprise performance of the year.

In general, the gala affair came off splendidly, with a record-number of Super Bornies (see sidebar for definition) and a confirmed Atomic Bornie (See sidebar for definition) doled out over the course of the ten hour event. A complete list and reactions from the winners below...
